After my scoreless sophomore season, I went into this season with high hopes. I trained harder than normal, and got myself through the pre-season. I started off the season on the 4th line, which wasn't a surprise to me after the season I had last year.
After 7 scoreless games to start the season (just 1 assist), I was scratched for the first time in my college career. It was a pain that I never had felt before, and certainly never expected. My practice habits got better, as I fought an inner-battle of what to do. Was it time to hang up the skates? Should I start looking to go somewhere else. If so - when? Next semester? Next year? After much debate, I decided quitting wasn't for me. I couldn't leave this team, and these guys.
I sat out 4 games in a row. Since this part of the schedule included winter break, I didn't play a game in 38 days. The only other time I had missed a game was my sophomore season when I had the flu. As you would think, this was one of the most difficult periods of time in my life. At this point, it had been 33 games since I scored, which included 1 year, 10 months, and 20 long days.
The morning of January 12th, 2010 was a day that I had been waiting for for a long time. I was finally back in the lineup against New England College; a very good hockey squad. I was suiting up on the second line, due to an injury to one of our other players. We were winning 2-1, and the third period was about to begin. I went out for a shift, and finally ended my misery. I took a loose puck in NEC's zone, and quickly snapped a shot on net. I remember hearing the puck hit the padding of the back of the net. I looked up to the sky in relief; I had finally scored.
Unexpectedly, I was yet again pulled out of the lineup for the next game. I was furious with this decision, and again questioned my future. I stuck with it, and played in the next game against Framingham State. I was scratched the next game against Salem State, but then returned the next game. I have played in each game since, scoring twice more. I hope that I can contribute and stay in the lineup as the season finishes, and as we enter the playoffs.
